Growing Quality potatoes needs an uninterrupted and sufficient water supply. Normally a certain portion of irrigation water is getting lost by evaporation and drift. Wasting water needs to be stopped! Different water saving irrigation methods have been testet in pilot projects which were supportetd by Agrarfrost. It turned out that drip irrigation is the most efficient system: water use per ton of potato could be reduced by 25%.

Today appr. 200 ha of poatatoes in Niedersachsen und Sachsen- Anhalt are produced under drip irrigation.

In addition, potato deliveries from farmers are not free from clods, soil , stones and other contaminants. Agrarfrost thus in Niedersachsen and Landkreis Vechtainvested invested into modern separation and recycling equipment which provides clean washed stones in different sizes and classified gradings. Those stones can be brought to further use, i.e. larger quantities are used in cooperation with fishing organisations and nature protection associations for the re- naturation of local waters. They are used to create new spawning grounds in rivers and creeks, and as a result fishermen observe the resettlement of salmonides which obtained as extinct in our local waters.

The rejected stones are also used to build stone banks as a space of living for protected species.
As a result we can observe that within a realitivly short period, those banks are settled by different species like amphibians, lizards and smaller rodents.
