Corn is an important crop for Mexico, and is a stable food source for the population. 59% of Mexico's production is with growers farming 5Ha or less with low yields, low profit, no technical support and commercial business primarily conducted through brokers.
The project created direct relationships with the farmers through the creation of Producer Organizations and provided a package of funding and technical assistance with a technology package of seed, fertiliser, field management, crop insurance and technology systems. Additionally, the project guaranteed that commercialization (purchase) of the corn was made.
A social education program was also implemented to support the communities - about 300 families.
Results of the project include:
- 80% improved land productivity
- 400% income increase
- 30,000 hours of education
- access to funding / access to technical support.
- Productivity savings.
