The development of commodity-specific quality schemes or issue-specific impact assessments is costly for companies. Members of SAI Platform are able to share the cost of such developments with other member companies, who are working together on a pre-competitive basis. In addition, SAI Platform helps its members communicate with and gain credit from a wide range of stakeholders, from farmers to consumers and from NGOs to Governments. Increasingly recognized as the primary voice of the food industry (and affiliates) regarding sustainable agriculture, the Platform enables the food chain to be proactive rather than reactive in both initiatives and debates..
Whatever your organization’s position in the food chain, it may be able to become a SAI Platform member: if you represent a food company, you may apply to become a Member; if you do not represent a food chain company (e.g. farmer group, trading company or service provider), you may apply to become an Affiliate Member. Both categories are expected to pay the same fee (as per the below fee structure) and have access to the same package of products and services and have the same rights to participate in meetings etc. The only difference lies in the fact that Affiliate Members do not have voting rights at the Platform’s annual general assemblies.
In order to become a member of SAI Platform your organization must adhere to its general sustainability principles, and is committed to promoting sustainable agriculture throughout the food chain, through a continuous improvement process. The second condition is that participation in the Platform’s work is undertaken on a voluntary basis, but is expected to be active.
Membership fee is € 3 750 for organizations with a turn over under US$ 200 million, € 7 500 for organizations with a turn over between US$ 200 million and US$ 1 billion, € 15 000 for organizations with a turn over between US$ 1 billion and US$ 5 billion, and € 30 000 per year for organizations with a turnover of more than US$ 5 billion. An initial commitment for 2 years is required.
