The 2011 Business and Industry Global Dialogue “Strengthening the role of the private sector in the transition to a Resource Efficient and Green Economy: From CSD-18 to the RIO+20 Earth Summit” is being organized by UNEP in partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce.
As the Rio+20 Earth Summit approaches, it is opportune to determine progress made to date, to enhance the momentum for transformative change and to outline actions and commitments needed. The Rio+20 themes will cover sustainability progress to date, international environmental governance and the Green Economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
UNEP’s Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) has a tradition of working with the private sector and promoting the sustainable development agenda. DTIE has supported the development and promotion of environmental management systems, company sustainability reporting and related international standards as well as resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production. In addition, DTIE hosts annual dialogues with Business and Industry on key issues, most recently on Biodiversity and Business in 2009. The 2011 Business and Industry Global Dialogue, a 2 day event, will be a high level forum that will review and operationalise the role and contribution of business and industry in the transition to a resource efficient and Green Economy and identify its specific contribution to the Rio+20 Earth Summit. The event will focus specifically on 2 themes: “The Transition to Green Economy” and “The Contribution of the Private Sector to Global Processes”. The event targets business and industry representatives from around the world.
