Unique Proposition and Added Value
SAI Platform Unique Proposition
A
number of organisations are engaged in research or communication in the field
of sustainability, sustainable agriculture, consumer communication, food research,
food safety and certification (of food processes & products). It was felt
however by the founding companies, Groupe Danone, Nestlé and Unilever,
that the food industry needs a distinct organisation: the Sustainable Agriculture
Initiative (SAI) Platform.
SAI Platform has unique characteristics compared to other organisations:
- SAI Platform is the only action-oriented initiative of the food industry in the field of sustainable agriculture.
- SAI Platform combines knowledge sharing, assessment of sustainable agricultural practices and active communication.
- SAI Platform explicitly seeks stakeholder involvement with all actors in the food chain.
- SAI Platform simultaneously takes into account environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability (triple bottom line): planet, profit, people.
SAI Platform Added Value
- SAI Platform offers food companies a way for cost effective pre-competitive cooperation to seek ways to ensure the sustainable supply of high quality agricultural products as basic ingredients for their products.
- SAI Platform aims for recognition and implementation of sustainable practices for mainstream agriculture (not niche markets) on a worldwide scale.
- SAI Platform seeks ways to increase consumers value and customer confidence as well as overall society’s welfare, including environment quality and farmers’ well being.
SAI Platform recognises that it does not have all the answers on what sustainable agriculture entails. Furthermore, new issues and different viewpoints will be raised continuously by platform members or by others.
We
do, however, develop a common framework that can provide answers to the basic
questions: What does sustainable agriculture mean for the food industry?
and How can the food industry support the development of sustainable agricultural
practices?
